Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) includes all of the ways that someone communicates besides talking. People can use AAC if they have trouble with speech or language skills. Augmentative communication is added to someone’s speech e.g. using visuals in addition to verbal speech. Alternative communication is used instead of speech e.g. using a speech generating device as the primary method of communicating.
When is this needed? What are the benefits to having this assessment completed?
Many people with communication difficulties benefit from AAC. Our Speech Pathologists can assess a client's ability to use a range of different AAC systems, including:
· High tech AAC such as speech generating devices and communication apps on iPad (e.g. Proloquo2Go)
· Low tech/no tech AAC such as visuals schedules, communication books and sign
After the assessment, our Speech Pathologists can assist in:
· Supporting clients to obtain funding for high tech systems through the NDIS (where appropriate)
· Creating and personalising AAC systems for clients
· Providing ongoing support and training to clients and their significant others on how to use the AAC system
What’s involved?
During an AAC assessment, our speech pathologists will examine a range of factors including communication skills, physical and cognitive skills , purpose of the AAC system and client preferences. Often this will involve trialing different systems and working with clients and their significant others to identify which AAC systems are most suitable for the client.
